Fishing Yellowstone Waters – Charles Brooks – 1984. A first printing of the first edition, in dust jacket. Brooks has inscribed the book to Austin Hogan, one of his mentors as an angling author and a close confidant. Hogan, an Adirondack native, was a man of many accomplishments, becoming one of the foremost historians of American fly fishing, with long ties to the American Museum of Fly Fishing in Manchester, Vermont, and The Orvis Company. He published countless articles and books on fly fishing and was a contributor, editor, and source for many more by authors such as George Grant, Joseph Bates, Paul Schullery, Arnold Gingrich, Dana Lamb, Charles Brooks, and Roderick Haig-Brown, among many others. In addition, he helped launch American Fly Fisher with the AMFF. He was also an artist and avid tyer, known for researching patterns from Europe and testing different materials, often via keen observation in, on, and below the water. In addition, laid in is a handwritten letter from Brooks to Hogan discussing the writing of this book, among other topics, and promising to send Hogan a copy. This is, indeed, the copy. Brooks has signed the bottom of the letter and attached a fly he presumably tied, as he and Hogan oft discussed different patterns, materials, etc. Also laid in is a photo of Brooks teaching a fly casting lesson in Montana, where he called home.
Book includes a chapter on general information about Yellowstone trout and the landscape, followed by chapters on specific creeks and rivers, such as the Yellowstone, Gallatin, Henry’s Fork, Madison, and Firehole.
