The Art of Weaving Hair Hackles for Trout Flies – George Grant – 1971. A first printing of the first edition. This a specially bound copy, sent from the author to Austin Hogan. Hogan was a man of many accomplishments, becoming one of the foremost historians of American fly fishing, with long ties to the American Museum of Fly Fishing in Manchester, Vermont, and The Orivs Company. He published countless articles and books on fly fishing and was a contributor, editor, and source for many more by authors such as Grant, Joseph Bates, Paul Schullery, Arnold Gingrich, Dana Lamb, and Roderick Haig-Brown, among many others. Laid in is a photograph of Carl Richards, Doug Swisher, Polly Rosborough, George Grant, and Art Flick. Bound in is a letter from Grant to Hogan, stating that “This is one of the first copies of my book…”, typed on Grant’s letterhead and signed in pen. A three-page letter is bound-in after the foreword, again typed from Grant to Hogan and signed in pen at the end. With it is a fly that was tied by Grant. In this letter, Grant discusses a number of fly-tying-related subjects, including corresponding with Alex Simpson in Scotland, Joseph Bates, and John Veniard of England. Bound in adjacent to page 38 is a 5-page typed/signed letter, and bound adjacent to page 39 is a 3-page photocopied letter from Grant to Bates and a 3-page photocopied return letter from Bates to Grant, discussing the book, fly tying, materials, and more. An extremely unique copy of this title, an illustrated guide featuring numerous woven hair hackle, wet fly, nymph, dry fly, bullhead, and minnow patterns, with a particular focus on the most effective patterns in the western US, especially Montana, Grant’s home state. Illustrated blue soft covers with spiral binding. An occasional mark, but near fine condition overall. The book is exactly as pictured. Any questions, please ask.
