John Rowe: an Eighteenth Century Boston Angler – John C. Phillips – 1929. This first edition limited to just 150 copies. A presentation copy, with the author’s ‘compliments of’ card laid in. Interestingly, Phillips struck the ‘Dr.’ from the card, potentially reflective of the humbleness of the beloved sportsman and conservationist from Massachusetts. Extracts from Rowe’s diary, detailing fishing between 1764 and 1774, mainly in ponds and streams near Boston, with an occasional trip to the Mashpee River on Cape Cod. Fascinating insight into angling in pre-Revolutionary times. This book formerly of the collection of a New England sporting author, decoy expert, and ornithological enthusiast. Marbled boards with wrap and gilt lettering at spine. Heavy stock paper. Some edge rubbing and bumping. Internally, extremely clean and bright. Near fine condition. The book is exactly as pictured.
