The Patterns of the Adventurous Tyer – Jack Gartside – 1993. The second printing of this uncommon first edition (1st printing of 300 copies and 2nd printing of 500). Laid in is a brochure for Jack Gartside’s Anglers’ Holiday Wish List, featuring an assortment of his flies and other fly fishing items he offered for sale. Also laid in are three letters from Gartside (typed) advertising the seminars he conducted in the Florida Keys with noted photographer Chris Murray. Additionally, two notes from the former owner are laid in, one of which is a sketch written on the back of a photocopied letter addressed to Stoddard’s fishing department about guides in the Keys. One final note indicates that the owner attended Gartside’s seminar in the Keys, with basic notes about travel on a piece of scrap paper present. The book is a classic among fly fishers, especially those in New England. It contains all of Gartside’s best-known freshwater patterns, such as the Sparrow, Gartside Pheasant Hopper, Soft Hackle Streamer, Firefly Mayflies and Caddis, CPF (chicken-poop) flies, the Gartside Gurgler (with 20 variations) and many more unusual and innovative designs.
