The Life and Battles of Jack Johnson – Champion Pugilist of the World – 1910. An extremely rare true 1st edition. Although the 1912 issue from Fox’s Athletic Library is often cited as the first edition, this appears to be the true first, published by Richard K. Fox two years earlier. Includes a variety of information on Johnson and other boxers of the time (including African American fighters), with illustrations, in B&W. Nicknamed the “Galveston Giant”, Johnson was an American boxer who, at the height of the Jim Crow era, became the first black world heavyweight boxing champion (1908-1915). He is widely regarded as one of the most influential boxers in history, and his 1910 fight against James J. Jeffries was dubbed the “fight of the century”. Soft cover, heavily worn, chipped, and taped. Internally, some soiling, staining, chips, and marks, but cleaner than I just made it sound. Tearing at staples toward rear of book, but still solidly intact. Red stains to rear cover and pages toward rear of book. A virtual ghost online. The book is exactly as pictured. Any questions, please ask.
