The Antelope and Deer of American – John Dean Caton – 1877. A comprehensive treatise upon the natural history, including the characteristics, habits, affinities, and capacity for domestication of the Antilocapra and Cervidae of North America. A rare first edition, and extremely rare presentation copy from the author, signed by Caton. Notably, Caton was an American associate justice and chief justice of the Illinois Supreme Court. He was also a lawyer, an early adopted of the telegraph, a natural history and science pioneer/author, and colleague/friend of Charles Darwin. The book includes general information and info specific to big game hunting. A fascinating work with B&W illustrations. Red cloth boards with gilt moose on front and black lettering and accents. Gilt lettering at spine. Some general shelf wear. Internally, minor edge wear to EPs and adjacent. A few spots of light foxing. VG condition. The book is exactly as pictured.
