Original Journal – War Diary of a Force Based on Iringa – 1916. A mixed handwritten and typed journal/diary of the events that took place from October 24 through late November 1916 in Iringa, Tanzania. During this campaign, the British forces took control of the region then known as German East Africa. It was a notable turning point in World War I on the African front. From the esteemed private collection of Esmond Bradley Martin, with his purchase slip laid in at rear. Martin was a geographer and conservation who largely pioneered the movement to combat ivory, horn, and tusk trading in Africa, which is believed to have led to his eventual murder at his estate in Kenya, with additional ties to the Carnegie Steel empire. A quite unique provenance. Totaling 83 pages, with 10 hand-drawn maps. Some names include Capt. D. McMillan, Lt.-Col. JM Fairweather, Col. Freeth, commanders Rodger and Norforce, and others. A compilation of their accounts, correspondences, letters, and more. In a journal-style binder. In excellent condition. A truly one of a kind piece of military and African history. The book is exactly as pictured. Any questions, please ask.
