Le Jardin des Caresses – Franz Toussaint – 1954 Limited Ed. Translates to ‘The Garden of Caresses’. One of 350 numbered copies with detailed drawings in subtly nuanced tones by Mariette Lydis. Toussaint is a representative of orientalist literature of the early 20th century. In the manner of Mardrus or Pierre Louÿs, he translates or adapts texts from the Orient by adorning them with stunning colors. His most famous translation remains the Rubayat of Omar Khayyam, but he also tackled works by Saadi, the great Persian poet of the 10th century, such as The Rose Garden, The Fruit Gardens, and Indian and Chinese tales. In his style, this title introduces the dreamed Orient of the Belle Epoque, a place of mystery, sensuality and magic, as in this Garden of Caresses, an ode to love, magnificently illustrated. In this context, bound in a custom fine binding. Stunning full leather with gilt lettering and accents. In a marbled slip case wrapped with leather. Marbled EPs. Measuring approx. 13″x10″. Unlike any on the market or in sales records. Text in French. In fine condition, with the leather at spine and around mouth of case slightly faded (from fuchsia to a more red tone). A one-of-a-kind book for lovers art the East. The book is exactly as pictured. Any questions, please ask.
