Court Tennis, Racquets, and Squash – Frederick Charles Tompkins – 1909 1st Edition
1 in stock
Court Tennis; with Notes on Racquets & Squash Racquets – Frederick Charles Tompkins – 1909. A rare first edition. Tompkins, a British professional who moved to the United States in 1904, wrote this simple guide for the players he was teaching at the racquet club in Philadelphia. Tompkins was part of a distinguished family of sportsmen: his great grandfather and grandfather had kept the tennis court at Merton College, Oxford (his grandfather was world champion in the 1860s), and his father had managed the court at Brighton. A leading player himself, Tompkins is also noted for having created doubles squash in 1907. An important American tennis title. With 100 pages of tennis, 9 pages of racquets, and 5 pages of squash. Additionally, 20 pages of photographs in B&W. Red cloth boards with gilt lettering. Minor shelf wear. Internally very clean; however, pages 23-26 are detached as group, and there are a couple spots of separation at block. VG condition. The book is exactly as pictured. Any questions, please ask.
