The Fly and the Fish – John Atherton – 1951. A first edition from Macmillan Publishing, in scarce dust jacket. Laid in is a letter from the author to Tom, whose information about nymphs, materials, etc., was described by Atherton as an exceptional addition to the book. However, Atherton’s book underwent numerous rounds of edits, particularly regarding nymph patterns, which were not his specialty, despite his very specific preferences for colors and materials. Consequently, Tom’s designs likely did not end up in the book–at least directly. The letter is handwritten and signed. Also laid in is a Christmas Card from the Anglers’ Club of New York featuring Atherton’s art on the front. This book was presented to Larry Roy by Burt Knight. A letter laid in suggests that this could be John Alden Knight, but I believe that to be purely speculation. The book was then gifted from Roy to Bob Harris, who wrote for New Hampshire Outdoorsman.
