After Wild Sheep in the Altai & Mongolia – Elim Demidoff – 1900 Rare 1st Ed. in Fine Binding w/ Letter
1 in stock
After Wild Sheep in the Altai and Mongolia – Elim Demidoff – 1900. A stunning first edition from Rowland Ward, in fine binding. A classic big game hunting title, described in detail in our blog, but focusing on hunting in central China for argali (Ovis ammon). Includes fold-out color map of the Altai Mountains and Russian-Chinese border with the expedition route marked, in pocket at rear and in exceptional condition. Photos and illustrations throughout. Demidoff was a Russian prince married to a countess and speculated to be the richest man in the world at the time. He undertook the expedition in order to acquire spectacular trophies. See our blog about this book for even more details. Three-quarter dark blue leather over Moroccan boards, with gilt accents and red label at spine. Zebra print EPs. An occasional spot internally, with about 20 pages at rear affected by some sort of purple bleeding, mainly limited to index. Overall, very good plus condition, due to purple marks. With the book is an original letter from Demidoff about the hunting trip, the publishing of the book, and other topics, addressed to ‘Harting’, believed to be James Edmund Harting, a naturalist and ornithologist. The items are exactly as shown. Any questions, please ask
