Manuscript – Pioneers of Central Africa – WJ Davy. A narrative written from extracts of the proposed book of Davy, with the proposed title ‘Pioneers of Central Africa’, focusing on David Livingstone, the pioneer Christian missionary and an early explorer in Africa, and HM Stanley, author, explorer, big game hunter, and more. Davy based on the work on personal knowledge of and experiences with Stanley and EJ Glave, a renowned writer and journalist. Notably, Glave and the author were on an exploratory mission on the Congo River c. 1869. The book was never published. From the esteemed private collection of Esmond Bradley Martin, with his purchase slip laid in at rear. Martin was a geographer and conservation who largely pioneered the movement to combat ivory, horn, and tusk trading in Africa, which is believed to have led to his eventual murder at his estate in Kenya, with additional ties to the Carnegie Steel empire. A quite unique provenance. Approximately 20 typed pages, with an article about Glave and the expedition pasted in. Tied with ribbon at spine, in soft cover typical of manuscripts. Quite nice condition, with clean, bright pages and easily legible text throughout. The book is exactly as pictured. Any questions, please ask.
