R.F. & H.L. Doherty on Lawn Tennis – 1903. A first edition from Baker and Taylor, NY. Laurie Doherty (1875-1919) won the Wimbledon singles title five times in a row and the doubles seven times, with his brother, Reggie. In 1903, he won the US Open, becoming the first tennis player to win a Grand Slam tournament outside of his native country. Reggie Doherty (1872-1910) won the Wimbledon singles title four times at the end of the 19th century and the doubles on eight occasions. This book contains some very rare images of early American players, including the team that played against England in 1900 (Ward, Whitman and Davis) and Larned. B&W photographic illustrations, as well as diagrams, tables, etc. Green cloth boards with gilt lettering and decoration and illustrated front cover. Book with general shelf wear, including bumping and light rubbing. A few spots with slight separation of block at spine. Light intermittent foxing in a few spots. Very good condition.
